She immigrated alone to the United States on December 28th, 1947, two years after the end of WWII. Her father had died at the beginning of the war and her mother died shortly after the war’s end.
Evelyn married Case De Vries, March 9th, 1949, in Hynes (Paramount), California at Emmanuel Reformed Church. Their wedding reception was at Knott’s Berry Farm at “Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Dinner Restaurant” and Mrs. Knott was the hostess.
Case and Evelyn immediately started a dairy farm together in Buena Park, California. In 1955, they moved to Chino, California. In 1968, Case and Evelyn moved off their dairy to Upland, California. Coincidently, this home was just blocks from where a Greyhound bus dropped her off 21 years prior, when she immigrated from the Netherlands. They lived in this house for 40 years. They continued to dairy farm in different locations around Southern California until 1999.They were charter members of the Chino Valley Reformed Church in Chino, California, now re-named “The Bridge.”After the death of her husband Case in 2009, Evelyn moved to Windsor, Colorado in to be closer to family.
Evelyn was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and mother-in-law. She was fondly referred to as Beppe. She was always interested, until the very end of her life, in the lives of her family.
She loved to cook and bake (anything lemon was her favorite) and always showed up to a family gathering with homemade applesauce. She loved to be a hostess! Up until the last month of her life, if you were to drop in to come for a visit, she would serve you a cup of tea. She loved to sew and went to school to learn to make patterns for clothing. During World War II this skill was invaluable because she made her new garments out of old clothing. Clothing was just one way she expressed herself— always accessorized wherever she went! She always enjoyed being a part of the church choir and enjoyed singing and listening to classical music and hymns. She was an artist and painted her entire life. She left one unfinished piece, setting down her paint brush only a few weeks ago.
She loved and she was loved. She will be missed. Evelyn is survived by her children. Garrett (Carla) of Gill, Colorado, Julia DeVries Van Loon (Tony) of Fallbrook, California and Margaret DeHaan (Larry) of Timnath, Colorado. She was blessed with 14 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.
Memorial service will be Wednesday, March 11,2020 at 11:00AM at Pierce Brothers Crestlawn Harlow Chapel, 11500 Arlington Avenue, Riverside, CA.
