Maria Isabel Rodriguez

On July 2, 1929 Ursolo Rodriguez and Clemencia De Leon welcomed their 6th child Maria Isabel Rodriguez de Leon to their family. Isabel grew up with three brothers and three sisters, Vicente Rodriguez, Hildefonsa Rodriguez, Pedro Rodriguez, Martina Rodriguez, Mauro Rodriguez, Maria Roddriguez.

The Rodriguez family grew up in the small town of San Pedro de Zistan, Jalisco, near the famous town of Chapala. As kids growing up, Isabel and her siblings played in the fields, would take showers in the nearby river every night and help Clemencia with the daily chores. The family made a living by raising horses, cows, pigs and working the land. As devout Roman Catholics the family attended mass faithfully every Sunday.

Maria Isabel grew up into a very beautiful young lady. At the very young age of 14 she met her first husband Rafael Zepeda. Everyday Rafael went to Isabel’s house and sat by the door trying to court young Isabel. After hours of talking, Ursolo would send Rafael home and Isabel to bed. Little did he know Isabel would go inside and continue talking to Rafael for hours while he laid outside through a small hole in the wall. Since it was common for men to steal their love interest during that time, Isabel’s younger sister Maria was in charge of watching her older sister. A year later when Isabel turned 15, it was said that she was “stolen” by Rafael, but Isabel appeared more than willing to run away with her love.

A few weeks later they were wed at the church. No sooner did young Isabel begin to have children. Over the years Isabel had 10 children sadly only 3 survived past the initial birth, Esperanza Zepeda, Juan Zepeda, and Antonio Zepeda. There loved blossoming for years and years. Tragically one faithful morning Antonio drowned at the young age of 11. While away on work in the USA working through the Bracero program Isabel met a man by the name of Nicolas Vargas. Nicolas Vargas was immediately infatuated with young Isabel, but could not make an advance while she was still married.

One early morning Rafael went on a fishing trip at 5am to get food for the family. He was fishing in the river known as “aguacatico” when he got trapped in a fish net and flipped over and drowned trying to get free. He was not found until 10 a.m. that morning. With Rafael out of the picture, Nicolas wasted no time in making moves on Isabel. Almost at a year from the death of her husband and on her mother’s birthday, she grabbed all the kids and left with Nicolas. Over the years they moved from town to town losing contact with her family. Finally settling down in Tijuana together they had ten more children with only six surviving: Teresa, Nicolas, Consuelo, Ysidro, Engracia, and Jose.

As the years went by, the family grew rapidly. Their children grew up and began to have their own children. Most of Isabel’s children moved to the United States and would return to visit her with their families. Christmas and Thanksgiving were Isabel’s favorite and happiest times of the year when she could celebrate with all of her children and grandchildren.

Isabel made the permanent move to the U.S. in 1995 and lived with her eldest daughter Esperanza. Over the years she jumped from one home to the next, always wanting to spend time with all her children and grandchildren. She loved taking walks along the parks, going camping, traveling to the wonders of the world and just spending time with her kids and grandkids. Any reason to celebrate Isabel would be excited. The feeling of family and loved ones brought her the most joy, her biggest and brightest smile seeing all her children in one room.

In early June of 2013 Isabel came down with pneumonia. She fought hard for weeks and weeks but had increase complication and eventually died of multi-organ failure on her 84th birthday on July 2, 2013. She will always be loved and remembered as a beautiful, kind and devoted mother who did anything and everything for her children and alll her loved ones. She is survived by her 8 children: Teresa Murillo, Esperanza Ayala, Consuelo Serrato, Engracia Canovas, Nicholas Vargas, Jose Vargas, Ysidro Vargas, and Juan Zepeda, many grandchildren and even great amount of grandchildren.

El 02 de Julio de 1929 Ursolo Clemencia Rodríguez y De León le dieron la bienvenida a su sexto hijo Maria Isabel Rodriguez de Leon. Isabel se creció con tres hermanos y tres hermanas, Vicente Rodríguez, Hildefonsa Rodríguez, Pedro Rodríguez, Martina Rodríguez, Mauro Rodriguez, Maria Roddriguez.

La familia Rodríguez se crearon en el pequeño pueblo de San Pedro de Zistan, Jalisco, cerca de la famosa ciudad de Chapala. Isabel y sus hermanos se pasaron su niñez jugadon en los campos, duchándose en el río cercas de la casa cada noche y ayudando a su madre Clemencia con las tareas diarias. La familia se ganaba la vida criando caballos, vacas, cerdos y trabajando la tierra. Como católicos devotos de la familia asistía misa cada domingo y durante la semana tambien.

Maria Isabel creció en una joven muy hermosa. A la temprana edad de los 14 años conoció a su primer marido, Rafael Zepeda. Todos los días, Rafael iba a casa de Isabel a platicar con ella tratando de cortejar a la joven Isabel. Después de horas de hablar, Ursolo enviaría a Rafael a casa y a Isabel a la cama. Pocos sabían pero Isabel se iría a un rinco de las casa y seguiría hablando con Rafael durante horas a través de un pequeño agujero en la pared. En el tiempo viejo era común que los hombres se robaran a su interés amoroso, la hermana menor de Isabel era encargada de cuidar a su hermana mayor. Un año más tarde, cuando Isabel cumplió 15 años, se dijo que fue "robada" por Rafael, pero Isabel parecía más que dispuesto a huir con su amor.

Unas semanas después fueron casados por la iglesia. Isabel no perdió tiempo en comenzar a tener hijos. A través de los años Isabel tenía 10 niños por desgracia sólo 3 sobrevivieron más allá de la luz inicial, Esperanza Zepeda, Juan Zepeda, y Antonio Zepeda. Trágicamente un mañana Antonio el más joven a ese tiempo se ahogó a la temprana edad de 11 años. Durante un viaje de trabajo a los EE.UU. a través del programa “Bracero” Isabel conoció a un hombre con el nombre de Nicolás Vargas. Nicolás Vargas se enamoró de inmediato con la joven Isabel, pero no pudo hacer un avance, mientras que estaba casada.

Una mañana temprana Rafael se fue de viaje a pescar a las 5 am para conseguir comida para la familia. Estaba pescando en el río conocido como "Aguacatico", cuando se quedó atrapado en una red de pesca y se voltio el barco y se ahogó tratando de liberarse. Él no fue encontrado hasta 10 a.m. de la mañana. Con Rafael fuera de la imagen, Nicolas no perdió tiempo en hacerle movimientos a Isabel. Casi un año después de la muerte de su marido y en el cumpleaños de su madre, tomó todos los niños y se fue con Nicolás. A través de los años se mudaron de ciudad en ciudad, ella perdiendo contacto con su familia. Finalmente, se establecieron en Tijuana. Juntos tuvieron diez mas hijos más con sólo seis supervivientes: Teresa, Nicolás, Consuelo, Ysidro, Engracia y José.

Sobre los años, la familia creció rápidamente. Sus hijos crecieron y empezaron a tener sus propios hijos. La mayoría de los hijos de Isabel se trasladaron a los Estados Unidos y volverían a visitarla con sus familias. Los días festivos eran los días mas favorito de Isabel. Ella le encantaba celebrar con todos sus hijos y nietos.

Isabel se vino a los EE.UU. en 1995 y vivió con su hija mayor Esperanza. Durante los años que se saltó de casa en casa, siempre con ganas de pasar tiempo con todos sus hijos y nietos. Le encantaba salir a caminar a lo largo de los parques, irse de camping, viajar a las maravillas del mundo y pasar el tiempo con sus hijos y nietos. Isabel estaría entusiasmado cualquier día sabiendo que iba estar de fiesta. El sentimiento de familia y seres queridos le trajo la mayor alegría, la más grande y brillante sonrisa al ver a todos sus hijos en una habitación.

A principios de junio de 2013 Isabel bajó con neumonía. Ella luchó duro durante semanas y semanas, pero tuvo aumento de complicaciones y, finalmente, murió de insuficiencia multiorgánica en su cumpleaños, el 2 de julio de 2013. Ella siempre será amada y recordada como una hermosa, amable y devota madre que hizo cualquier cosa por sus hijos y por sus seres queridos. Ellas es sobrevivida por sus 8 hijos: Teresa Murillo, Esperanza Ayala, Consuelo Serrato, Engracia Cánovas, Nicolás Vargas, José Vargas, Isidro Vargas y Juan Zepeda, números nietos y vis-nietos.
