Larry Oakeson passed away peacefully March 25, 2024 at home surrounded by family. Born to Don & Maxine Oakeson on January 30, 1943, he was raised in South Jordan and graduated from Bingham High School, where he played football and was part of FFA. Larry served in the Army between 1964-1970. He married Diane Dean on November 23, 1966. Larry spent his working years at Sperry, McDonnell Douglas, and retired from Boeing as a tooling specialist.
He was a mentor, coach, and friend to many. A very social man, his favorite place to be was around his firepit swapping stories with whoever dropped by. He loved to play games: cards, checkers, pegboard, pool, and horseshoes. He had a knack for winning (and not getting caught). He was a master of the claw machine, a skill the grandkids never tired of, and pulled pranks with great joy.
He enjoyed participating in a variety of sports: softball, baseball, basketball, bowling, trap shooting, chariot and horse racing, riding clubs, and fishing tournaments. Of all these, it was the chariot and horse racing that earned him the most trophies. Some of his favorite horses he worked with were Poco Lyla Lady, Poco Dusty Dawn, Paleface Duke, and his biggest winner Dealin Blackjack.
He included his family on many of his adventures. Road trips to Yellowstone & Jackson Hole, the Fort Bridger Mountain Man Rendezvous, Camping at Marsh Lake (even in the snow), fly fishing the Blacks Fork River (where Oakesons have fished for generations), elk hunting along the Great Mountain Trail near Salina, utv trips along the Paiute Trails out of Marysvale, deer hunting up Four Mile Canyon near Nephi, and duck hunting in Ogden Bay were some of his favorites.
After retirement, he enjoyed a bit more adventurous travel including a number of trips to Alaska: a cruise, several fishing expeditions, and a bear hunt. He went moose hunting in Utah, took a trip to Cancun, and a winter excursion into Yellowstone.
Thank you to all the friends he made at pie & coffee and also the warm room.
Larry is survived by his wife Diane, children: Cray (LeaAnn), Chad (Carolyn), and Angie (Cody), grandchildren: Blake (Ariana), Hanna, Landon, Ben (Shirsten), Jackson (Dharma), Gabby (Derek), and Niels, great grandchildren: River, Renegade, and Rharix, his dog Ace, and his horse Jack, siblings: Ken (Gwen), Merlene, Donna (Jay), and Janice (Russ).
He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Ned.
The family would like to publicly thank the wonderful neighbors that’ve been like family to Larry & Diane: Roy, Smoky, & Beth, and also to Allison with Serenity Hospice for her invaluable knowledge and care.
