Layne Sanford Bateman

1944-2022

West Valley City, Utah - Layne, 78, passed away from complications due to dementia on May 23, 2022. In 2016, he was diagnosed with cancer (Multiple Myeloma). Thanks to Dr. Richard Frame of UCS and the Huntsman Cancer Hospital, for extending our time with Layne.

Born April 30, 1944 to Rex and Viola (Lola Mae) Bateman. He was raised in Garfield, Utah until his family moved to Magna, Utah. He graduated from Cyprus High School, attended Weber State College, and was in the Utah National Guard in the 19th Special Forces (ABN) as a paratrooper.

Layne worked over 40 years at St. Regis Paper Company (Packaging Machinery Division) where he retired as the Plant Manager.

He married Geraldine (Jerry) Dec. 23, 1969. They were together for 53 years. They raised, trained, and rode Arabian horses for over 35 years. He enjoyed competing in Western Pleasure.

Layne was a loving, friendly, hardworking family man who always had a smile and hello for all. He enjoyed playing golf, fishing, hunting, and camping with family and friends. Layne and his family were survivors of the Yellowstone 6.9 earthquake in 1959.

Layne is survived by his loving wife Jerry, son Ty (Jodi), daughter Lorrie, brother Mark, 8 grandchildren: Crystal (Reed), Candice (Dustin), Amanda (Justin), Ty Jr., Joshua (Camille), Jade, Garrett, and Lincoln, 13 great grandchildren: Carson, Caden, Payson, Max, Grady, Connor, Carter, Jaxon, Collin, Makayla, Liam, Braxton, Alex and 2 great granddaughters soon to be in August ’22.

Preceded in death by his parents, Rex and Lola, brothers: Lance and Greg, son in law Drue, grandson Logan, great granddaughter Meleah, and great grandson Logan.

Our thanks to Auberge Memory Care for sharing their beautiful facility with Layne. A special thanks to his caregivers Juan (Layne’s buddy), and Angeles for the loving care they gave to Layne, and Tracy for her friendship and support. Thanks to Envision Hospice for the short time they took care of Layne.

A viewing will be held Saturday, June 4, 2022 from 10am to 12:30pm at Family Funeral Care located at 13001 South 3600 West, Riverton, Utah.

The graveside service will be held Saturday, June 4, 2022 at 1:30pm at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park located at 3401 South Highland Drive, Millcreek, Utah.
