Annette Echevarria Flynn was born on March 1, 1958, in San Antonio, Texas, to Air Force Lt. Col. Ramon L. Echevarria and Anair Irizarry Echevarria. It was a good year for beautiful souls.
As her family traveled the world with her father’s military assignments, Annette often had to make new friends in unfamiliar places, a challenge she met with resilience and kindness. Even as a young girl, she stood up for the meek and the outcast. Though she was often a minority in the schools she attended, she remained proud of her Puerto Rican heritage and identity.
Before starting a family, Annette was deeply involved in school life. She was a gifted musician, playing first flute in the band, alto sax in jazz band, and piccolo in the orchestra. She could sing as effortlessly as she played, with the vocal range of Whitney Houston and the power of Barbra Streisand—matching them note for note in their biggest hits.
She was also a strong and graceful athlete, especially in swimming. Watching her glide through the water was mesmerizing. Her cartwheels were flawless.
On April 12, 1980, Annette married her soulmate, Joseph Flynn, who became her lifelong partner and friend for over 46 years. They met in college and were inseparable from that day forward. Together they had a son, Edward (Ray), and a daughter, Stephanie, both of whom she adored. Stephanie gave her 4 grandchildren, all of whom she equally adored!
After receiving a pistol and rifle for her birthday, she discovered a passion for target shooting. With her steady aim and pinpoint accuracy, she earned the nickname “Bullseye Annie,” a title bestowed by the Florida State Police.
Though an average student in high school, Annette truly hit her stride in college. She earned three Associate of Applied Science degrees—in Social Science, Special Education, and Recreation Direction—and later graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting. At Vance-Granville Community College, she served as President of her sorority and as a Student Senator for two years.
Annette’s insight and intuition were extraordinary. Major family decisions weren’t made without her input. She was not only the heart and soul of the family—but often the brains too.
She was an avid reader and writer, a movie buff, and a collector of Godzilla memorabilia, monster figures, and robot models. She loved cooking and was a truly exceptional chef.
Over the years, Annette wore many hats: she counseled pregnant teens in New York, served as Executive Assistant to the president of a Japanese manufacturing firm in Florida, managed a law office in Baton Rouge, volunteered at hospitals, led Girl Scout troops, and more. She excelled in everything she did—but above all, she excelled at being a devoted mother, wife, grandmother, and friend.
With a lion’s heart, a tiger’s determination, and the softness of a kitten, Annette approached life with fierce compassion. She offered kindness and understanding to everyone she met. People who knew her walked away feeling more joyful, confident, and loved.
I had the honor of spending 46 years with her, and my love for her grew stronger with each passing day. Even now, it continues to grow.
Annette had “the glow.” It’s hard to describe, but impossible to miss. Her warmth radiated far beyond her, and her smile—always present in her eyes—lit up every room. Her gaze was as comforting as a gentle summer breeze.
Everyone who knew Annette loved her. Friends and family alike recognized her as an angel on earth. She brought joy and laughter wherever she went—whether you wanted it or not.
Family was everything to Annette. She called her mother daily, often several times, and they shared a beautiful mother-daughter bond. Their weekly lunches were a treasured tradition—and she never failed to order her favorite: coconut shrimp. Her children and grandchildren were endlessly showered with love. She was a devoted daughter, a wonderful sister, and a true friend to all.
Annette’s light will continue to shine in the hearts and minds of all who knew her.
Magical and angelic, she leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and kindness.
