

She was the beloved mother of four children, Cara (Bart) Staples, Michael (Denise) Guthrie, Carol Lawrence and Larry (Sun) Guthrie. Berniece had seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband James Merkel.
Berniece was born in Olpe, Kansas on March 19, 1933. She grew up on a farm and learned to drive a tractor at the age of six.
In 1958, Berniece moved to Brevard County, Florida. Her career included a medical office, banking, real estate (on Board of Realtors), mortgage closings (residential and commercial), and regional auditor for a title company.
Berniece was perpetually positive and had a very generous spirit. She continuously reached out to those in need from infants to adults and animals.
Berniece enjoyed spending time with the family she treasured, embracing every moment. She also loved her precious kitties and friends.
She had diverse interests: travel, crossword puzzles, bingo and watching football (Kansas City, University of Florida and the University of Central Florida).
A visitation for Berniece will be held Saturday, December 2, 2023, from 10am to 11am at Faith Lutheran Church, 280 East Merritt Avenue in Merritt Island, followed by a funeral service at 11am and a reception at noon. Please note, due to the Merritt Island Holiday Parade, some roads will be closed from 9:15am to 12:30pm.
Berniece, a life-long Christian, will be laid to rest at 3pm at Florida Memorial Gardens, 5950 South US Highway 1, Rockledge, Florida.
