

Billy Dewey, a long-time resident of Merritt Island, FL passed away peacefully on November 25, 2022.
Billy was born on January 30, 1931 to William and Opal Dewey in Leroy, KS and moved with his family to Merritt Island in the 1930s. He graduated from Cocoa High School and served in the U.S. Army in Korea as an Armorer in the area of demolition and explosives.
In 1954 he met LaVerne (Townsend) Dewey, while they were both stationed in Lawton, OK at Fort Sill. They were married in 1954 and moved back to Merritt Island.
Billy served for many years at Patrick Air Force Base with Transit Authority and retired to spend time with LaVerne traveling places around the world. They enjoyed camping about the United States in pursuit of their rock collecting hobby. They also regularly visited family in Wisconsin and around the country.
Billy was a member of the Florida Historical Society and enjoyed volunteering as a docent at the Brevard Museum of History and Natural Science. He volunteered with the Central Brevard and Melbourne Rock and Gem Clubs as a teacher and an officer. He was a certified Gemologist and enjoyed many friendships with the Club members.
For those wishing to make a contribution in Billy's name, please consider donating to the Florida Historical Society. Through them, he enjoyed telling kids about Florida's history and it was an organization close to his heart.
Billy was predeceased by his parents, his siblings, and his wife of 57 years. He is survived by his two sons, Michael (Sandra) Dewey and David (Cammie) Dewey; and his four grandchildren, Greg, Betsy, Madison, and Matthew.
A memorial service for Billy will be held Friday, December 9, 2022 at 1:00 PM at Life Event Center at Florida Memorial, 5950 South US Highway 1, Rockledge, Florida.
