Carl “Ralph” Schumacher, age 91, was born in Kansas City, Kansas, November 5, 1932, Carl “Ralph” Schumacher, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina on September 8, 2024.
After graduating from Kansas State, Ralph began his career in 1955, working for McDonnell Aircraft (later known as McDonnell-Douglas and eventually Boeing). Initially testing aircraft, Ralph later had the privilege of contributing to the early days of space exploration. He supervised the instrumentation of the Mercury capsule, was a key part of the team that worked on the Gemini program, and whose work helped pave the way for mankind’s eventual journey to the moon.
Ralph was a man who spoke volumes through his actions rather than his words. He understood the power of restraint and lived by it. Rarely did he speak ill of others, and his wisdom in taming his tongue was a quality that left a deep mark on all who knew him. Proverbs 15:1 tells us "A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger," Ralph embodied this wisdom, knowing that kindness and patience heal where harsh words can destroy. He showed his family that true strength comes from knowing when to speak and when not to.
When Ralph said he would do something, you could count on him. He lived a quiet, disciplined life, honoring his commitments. His steady, stoic nature wasn’t just a reflection of his character but a gift to those around him. He didn't waste time complaining; instead, he focused on solutions, embodying a sense of calm in times of difficulty.
His generosity knew no bounds, especially when he saw someone in need. He didn’t just offer words of encouragement—he offered tangible help. Ralph’s heart was open to those around him, and his generosity was a testament to his love for others.
In his marriage, Ralph modeled what love and partnership should be. His devotion to his wife Joyce was clear to all who observed their bond—a steady, kind, affectionate, and enduring love. He showed us what it means to love quietly, not just with words but with actions.
He also faithfully served his church, First Christian Church of Melbourne, leading in several different roles over the many years he and Joyce lived in Satellite Beach, Florida. In addition to church, Ralph was involved with the Indian River Players, sometimes a leading man and sometimes a supporting character.
He deeply loved the arts. First, Ralph was Joyce’s biggest supporter, helping her run her Art Studio business in downtown Melbourne and schlepping hundreds of paintings, racks, etc., to art shows all over the United States. Ralph also loved music, singing, and community theater.
His zest for life showed in his love of travel, enthusiasm for football, and thrill for driving fast cars.
Ralph’s good nature and easygoing personality made him well-liked by many. People were drawn to his quiet presence, sensing the depth of his character without the need for grandstanding. He was, simply put, a man you could trust—a man whose life was well lived.
His example will live on in the lives he touched, a reminder that a life of faith, integrity, humility, and love leaves a legacy far greater than words alone could ever capture.
Ralph is survived and will be deeply missed by his cousin, Kathryn Potter of Wellington, Missouri; his brother-in-law, Francis Hansen of Ormond Beach; his daughter Dana Schumacher Wilson (Cameron), granddaughter Aliece Christopher (David), great-grandchildren, Caleb, Owen, and Violet; his grandson Michael Wilson (Abbie) all of the Charleston, South Carolina area; his son Steven Schumacher (Robin) of Spring, Texas and grandson Matthew; his son Scott Schumacher (Donna), grandson Charles, granddaughter daughter Erin (Brandy), great-grandson Harper of the Pensacola Florida area, grandson Tyler Schumacher (Angelene), great-grandson Jude of Warren, Ohio, and grandson Nicholas Schumacher of Pensacola.
The family is having a Celebration of Life in South Carolina.
