Clyde Combs, Jr. was born September 13, 1929 in a farmhouse in Oak Ridge, North Carolina that had no plumbing, electricity or water, the spring they got water from was about a ¼ mile from the house. He died in his home in Satellite Beach, Florida on March 1, 2023, this would not have been possible without tender loving care from wonderful caregivers.
Clyde was always interested in science, but his elementary and secondary education did not have science classes. His interest in science was triggered by observing his surroundings and the fact that people of wealth had a better life with technology.
After Graduating from High School, he went to visit his Great Uncle Frank Jones, in the Dallas Texas area, who helped him get a job in Odessa Texas with an oilfield supply company and after a time went to work for the same company in Monahans Texas where he met his first wife Virginia Faye Kizer Combs.
During the Korean war rather than being drafted into the Marines he joined the Air Force. While assigned to West Palm Beach Florida their son Gary Donald Combs was born on February 27, 1954.
After his discharge from the Air Force, he applied to Southern Methodist University but to get accepted he had to take supplementary classes for physics and chemistry. He graduated with a Degree in Electrical Engineering in May of 1960. During his early college years, he worked on his Great Uncle’s Ranch near Rome, Texas as a cowboy, he worked many jobs during his college days to keep food on the table for his family. He was accepted into a coop program and was assigned to work for Texas Instruments in Dallas Texas, his job was to test semiconductors. He worked in that field until he retired with Harris Corporation. He had patents with each company he worked for and some that he filed himself. He took classes throughout his career at various colleges and obtained an MBA degree as well.
Clyde met his second wife through a good friend of Faye’s, and married Fannie Lou Combs on March 4, 1995. He was welcomed into her family and loved her children as his own.
