On the morning of December 29th of the year 2016, our beloved Sister, Mother, Grandmother, and friend, Dorothy Lee Baines, gained her wings to be with the Lord, at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Florida. She was 96 years old. Dorothy was born on January 8, 1920 to parents Marshall Troupe and Rosa Troupe, and was raised in New York City. In October of 1937, she married her 1st husband Bryan McLean, Sr and together they had 3 children, Bryan McLean, Jr, William Martindale McLean, and Patricia Rose McLean. They divorced in 1959, and in 1961 she married her 2nd husband, Herschel C Baines. Dorothy worked as an employee of AT&T, initially as a long-distance operator and later advanced to the level of executive assistant to the Vice President of AT&T, dedicating greater than 30 years of service to the company. Dorothy was inducted as a member of the Lifetime AT&T Pioneers Club, due to her exemplary service at AT&T.
After retirement, in 1975 she moved with husband Herschel to Indian Harbour Beach Florida where she participated in the Melbourne Florida New York Club, Red Hat Ladies Club (1997-2008), AARP, United Order of True Sisters (UOTS) and various other social clubs to occupy her time. A unique soul, Dorothy was very talented and gifted in many things such as baking, cooking, painting, knitting, crocheting, and various other arts and crafts. She was also an avid soap opera fan and made sure not to miss any of her shows by recording them with multiple VCR’s in the house. Dorothy also enjoyed traveling, cruises, and liked to pull a handle or two of the slot machines for fun. In her early years, she was a member of the renown Abyssinian Baptist church of Harlem New York, and in later years was a member of St Paul’s United Methodist Church of Melbourne, Florida, from 1978-2016. Dorothy served as a volunteer in the St Paul’s church thrift store from 1978-1989. All that knew Dorothy loved her dearly and she will truly be missed by her family and many friends.
The Family wants to thank Ms. Gail Chandler the care giver of our mom Dorothy Baines. Mom really loved being with her and enjoyed her company. They went shopping, driving and going out to lunch every Friday and they had fun together. Thank You, Gail.
