Evelyn McIntyre Zeigler was born on October 3rd, 1920 in Marion, South Carolina as the daughter of Richard and Florence McIntyre and later became the big sister to Richard Howard, Jr, (Buddy). She married her high school sweetheart, Jack Zeigler, in Meridian, MS, on January 24th, 1943. She died peacefully on November 13th as a beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great great grandmother.
Evelyn has been missing Jack for 19 years, often telling us what a great leader and Colonel he was in the United States Air Force. Very early this morning, she left us to be with him after spending too much time here without him. She was an amazingly beautiful, sincerely strong, passionately patriotic, and immensely intelligent lady who knew how to enjoy life to the fullest. We'll miss you dearly, “Momz”, yet relish that you're back with your high school sweetheart, watching over us and enjoying the sunsets with a cocktail. It's interesting, chilling, and prudent that you left us shortly after the fireworks for Veterans Day.
Leaving us was a dedicated and strong lady. As a child and teen during the great depression, a mom and wife during World War 2 and the Korean War, and a retiree during the gas embargo, life made her strong. Adorned often in a shade of lavender with a butterfly broach or two, she was elegant and intelligent while helping define the role of a modern lady, post retirement, in the 1970s, working part time designing gorgeous flower arrangements while Jack was brokering some sort of stock deal.
Many special memories and life lessons have been left with everyone, such as, “Politeness costs nothing”, “Always make your own opinions of people ”, and “I don’t know about that, you better go ask your grandfather.” From a young girl, to an elderly lady, she has touched the lives of many people, leaving a legacy of loyalty, love, and lavender.
She is survived by her daughters, Joy Gay and Lyn James, her grandchildren, Col. Sheryl Kane, DDS (Jimacie), Steven Kane (Laura), Wendy Cooley, Sandie Harding (Richie), and Shannon Daras, her great grandchildren, Joshua Beard, Caleb Beard, Ronan Beard, Riley Kane, Brody Kane, Don Cooley, Cindie Jones, Holli Locklear, and Sylvia Daras, and 3 great great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her honor to the Air Force Aid Society, which helps airmen secure funds and travel arrangements when emergency leave is necessary, can be made at http://www.afas.org/home .
