Jerry Lee Matthews, age 76, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2025 in Palm Bay, Florida. Born in Bolivar, Missouri, he was the sixth of seven children born to Gladys and Henry Matthews. From an early age, Jerry embodied the values of humility, service, and quiet strength—qualities that would define his life.
In 1967, Jerry answered the call to serve his country, joining the United States Air Force. During his 20-year military career, he served honorably in the Vietnam War and held positions as a Logistics Plans Specialist and a Material Facilities Specialist. Though he was modest about his service, his dedication earned him numerous honors, including:
Air Force Commendation Medal with Two Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with One Silver Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with One Oak Leaf Cluster, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, NCO Professional Military Education Ribbon, Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon with Four Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Service Ribbon, Air Force Overseas Service Long Tour Ribbon with Four Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Training Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal with Four Bronze Service Stars, Philippine Presidential Unit Citation, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
In 1972, Jerry married the love of his life, Milagros “Rosie” Matthews. They shared 45 beautiful years of marriage before her passing in 2017. Together, they raised a loving family. Jerry is survived by his daughters, Michele Payne (husband Morris Payne) and Sharon Burton (husband Maurice Burton); his stepdaughter, Gena; and his grandchildren: Vanessa Matthews, Jaiden Matthews, Breanna Payne, and Morris-J Payne. He was also a proud great-grandfather to Morris, Jay, and Carson Payne.
Jerry is preceded in death by his parents, Gladys and Henry Matthews (1989 and 1986), and brothers Kenneth Hooper (2019) and Wayne Matthews (1999). He is survived by his siblings: Ray Hooper, Mary Coursey, Ardenia Stokes, and Dixie Moucheron.
Jerry enjoyed the simple pleasures of life—fishing, reading Western novels, watching sports, and faithfully tuning into Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, Survivor, and American Idol. He loved playing the lottery, cheering for his grandchildren at their games, and spending time with his family. Jerry was known for his kind heart, gentle wisdom, and unwavering support for those he loved. A quietly proud American, he carried himself with dignity and humility throughout his life.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Life Event Center at Florida Memorial, 5950 South US Highway 1, Rockledge, Florida. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM at the same location, with a committal service at 12:00 PM at Florida Memorial Gardens.
Jerry will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
