Joe passed away peacefully on August 12, 2025, at the Hospice facility in Rockledge, FL at the age of 93. Joe will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 48 years, Connie. He was the dear father to Kathleen (Kathy) Gibbons (Henry, deceased), Colleen Wallace (Bruce), beloved Pappy to Jenna and Kathryn (Katie), and was loved by his step-sons Bruce Green (Shelby) and Brett Hollingsworth (deceased). He was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Julia (Nicklo) O’Neill. Joe was born in Lykens, PA, a small coal-mining town, attended St. Mary’s Catholic grade school and graduated from Lykens public school where he lettered in football and basketball. He joined the Navy, served aboard the carrier Monterey then transferred over to the submarines and served on the Sea Lion which was a diesel sub. After the Navy he was hired by Western Electric (which turned out to be a good choice) then transferred to Florida in 1970. Joe was offered a retirement buy-out by Nokia (which was Western Electric after many changes in ownership) and he took it without having to think twice. He often mentioned that he had been retired more years than he worked. He enjoyed watching most sports, but his favorite team was the Pittsburgh Steelers. He and his wife also enjoyed cruising, sailing his Hobie Cat and traveling in the motorhome to 49 states plus a cruise to Hawaii to make it 50 states. Joe’s ashes will be interred at Florida Memorial Gardens in Rockledge at a future date.
