at The Wilson Place in Cocoa Beach, Fl.
Joyce was a founding member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Indialantic, and was a choir member for most of her years. Her lifelong friends were made of the congregation, and their faith together, kept her final days spiritually uplifted. She loved her church, and her faith in God kept her solid through some demanding times.
Born and raised in Augusta, GA; she married her childhood sweetheart and moved around the western U.S. as an Army wife. The space program then lured the couple to Canova Beach in 1955. Joyce began singing and banging out boogie-woogie on the piano at a little pub on the beach, called the Merri-Mac. She often said she had some of her most fun times there, jamming with a sit-in band made up of a gut-bucket bass and bongos. A new family member forced a move to larger quarters in Satellite Beach, were she resided until her illness. She entertained the Space Coast for many years, retiring in 1978. Her spare time was filled with tennis and painting, vacation was a time for camping in the Smoky Mountains. Many friends were made on these trips, for Joyce always held campfire sing-alongs that would draw the entire campground in; she had the ability to get everyone to sing from their heart and spread her joy.
After retirement, the couple enjoyed house boating, and they built a cabin in the Ocala Forest . Many a weekend was spent either on the water, or in the woods.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, William Latimer Scattergood, and her granddaughter, Julie Ann Dean. She is survived by daughter, Lisa Ann Scattergood with life partner Connie Lowe, and son, William Lee Scattergood. Grandsons, Dallas Ray McDonald, John Anthony McDonald (Melanee Leigh Bennett) with Great-grand daughter, Julie Ann McDonald.
