

Born in Joplin, MO in 1923 to Virginia and Bruce, Bill was a nephew of the famed humorous Will Rogers. Bill graduated from the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD and proudly served his country for 30 years. He specialized in Submarine and Defense Intelligence and had tours in the Mediterranean, Pacific and Washington DC.
Upon retirement, and for the next 40 years he maintained a life of service. He joined and held leadership positions in many civic, patriotic and charitable organizations in Cape Coral and later in Melbourne, Florida. Organizations such as his Church, Kiwanis, Boy Scouts of America, Military Order of World Wars, Youth Leadership Programs, TLC Children’s Home, Children’s Science Center, and Chamber of Commerce were very important to him.
A proponent of health and wellness, he lived an active and full life. A quiet and spiritual man, he was actively involved in Ascension Catholic Church. He lived a Grace-filled life, always willing to help others and always had a kind word or spiritual wisdom to convey.
He is survived by his children, who hold deep admiration for their father. Mary Habit (John), Tony (Isabel), John, Leslie McElhinney (Ted), Susan Jerome, and Katherine Kerfoot (Bill), 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Josie, our mother, in 1998.
A Memorial Mass will be held at Ascension Catholic Church at 12:00 on Saturday November 14.
