Morton Diamond passed away after a battle with cancer on November 3, 2012. He was born May 7, 1932 in Long Beach, New York, to Dr. Abraham and Shirley Diamond. Mort attended Adelphi University (then College), where he was on the track team, and graduated in 1953 with a BA in psychology. He was inducted into the Adelphi Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005. Upon graduation, Mort served a tour in the US Army. He spent most of his career as an administrator in the State of Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. In retirement, in 1998 Mort co-founded Tuttie’s Place, an owner-operator of residential group homes for adolescent males located in Baltimore.
A resident of Bowie, Maryland, since 1962, Mort served the community tirelessly in civic, religious and athletic organizations. He was a long-time member of Congregation Nevey Shalom in Bowie, and Kol Shalom in Annapolis. He received numerous personal awards for his leadership and activism, including the Maryland Governor’s Volunteerism Award.
Mort’s passion was youth track and field. He was the founder and president of the Maryland Track and Field Development Association, which for 25 years conducted the East Coast Invitational Track and Field Championships, one of the most prestigious youth track meets in the country. Mort was a six-year president of the Potomac Valley Association of USA Track & Field, the national governing body of the sport, and was a certified master official of field events. In 2001, he was honored at the USA Track & Field national convention with the President’s Award for his many years of service, accomplishment and leadership in the sport.
Mort married the former Esther Greenberg in 1958. They have three children, Penny, Jeremy and Robert, and five grandchildren, David, Benjamin, Deanna, Charlotte and Eleanor.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Tuesday November 6, 2012, at Danzansky-Goldberg Memorial Chapel, 1170 Rockville Pike, Rockville MD 20852. 301-340-1400. The family will be sitting Shiva at their home at 4119 Crosswick Turn, Bowie, MD 20715. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions in Mort’s memory be made to Tuttie’s Place, 3013 Chelsea Terrace, Baltimore, MD 21216.
