James grew up in Antlers, Oklahoma. James was in the Army where he was drafted at 20 years old. He studied at Rose State College in Midwest City, OK and studied business and finance at Oklahoma City University. James was a postmaster for 25 years.
He is survived by Cindy Hammons, the mother of his two surviving sons, James William Hammons and Mark Edward Hammons of Rogers. James is also survived by his two brothers, Stan Hammons of Antlers, OK and J.R. Hammons of Atlanta, GA, as well as two sisters, Marilyn Goss of Wauchula, FL and Margie Hefner of Oklahoma City, OK. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Victoria Hammons of Lincoln, AR, and Dylan and Emma Hammons of Rogers.
James was an avid outdoorsman, fisherman, hiker and gardener. He was also a big Arkansas Razorback fan. He had a new love for playing his guitar and recently played in a band as a new project. He loved his family and spending time with his grandchildren.
