

Mary Ellen Gordon, 84, of Rogers, died quickly and unexpectedly in her sewing room early Sunday morning. Mary was born September 19, 1926 to Hugh and Ora Baker in Lovington, NM. She was the middle child of nine children. Mary moved to Benton County when she was nine and attended school in Rogers. This is where she met the love of her life, John Gordon. Mary and John moved many times over their 52 year marriage, moving back to Rogers for retirement in 1982. They enjoyed a close circle of Mary’s five sisters and her brother, Henry Baker who lived here. Mary and John had two children, Helen Gordon of Durham, NC and John A. Gordon of Rogers. Mary was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church. She was an avid volunteer and spent many hours of her retirement years making crafts and sewing for underprivileged children. She was the former seamstress at Hunts Department Store.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband John and her sisters: Phoebe Manly, Nellie P. Baker, Harriet Trolia all of Rogers and her three brothers, John Baker of Maryville, ND, Henry Baker of Rogers, and Frank Baker of Higginsville, MO. She is survived by her two sisters Margaret Rushing and Ruby Stone of Rogers; her children Helen and John, her daughter-in-law Violet Gordon; four grandchildren, Lena Murdock and her husband Scott of Wichita, KS, Jacob Gordon and wife Jennifer of Rogers, Aaron Matyac of Hyde Park, NY, and Elliot Matyac of Raleigh, NC. Mary had two great-grandsons, Thomas Francis Kemp of Bella Vista and Peyton William Gordon of Rogers and many nieces and nephews whom she loved.
Visitation will be at Rollins Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 17 from 5:00-7:00 PM with services at Grace United Methodist Church on Thursday, August 18, at 10:00 AM. Donations can be made in her name to Grace United Methodist Church. Services under the direction of Rollins Funeral Home.
