

Wilma Laverne Welch, a compassionate and caring soul, passed away on February 4, 2026, at the age of 95. Born in Busch, Arkansas, on October 16, 1930, to Frank and Parelee Weddington, Laverne was a beloved resident of Gateway, Arkansas, for over sixty years.
Laverne worked many jobs throughout her life but was best known for the restaurant she owned in Gateway, Arkansas, for many years. She loved caring for people, especially through cooking, and was always in the kitchen preparing meals for family and guests. She had a passion for trying out new recipes and was also an avid music lover, playing the mandolin and guitar. Laverne enjoyed getting together with family and friends to play music for many years. She was even in the movie "The Blue and the Gray" alongside her mother, sisters, and aunt. Laverne cherished having visitors over to discuss family and area history, and she was known as the family historian.
A beloved member of New Prospect Baptist Church, Laverne adored her church family. She was a woman of strong faith and generosity, incredibly caring for her whole family.
Laverne was preceded in death by her husband, Junior Welch; her son, Reggie Welch; her parents; her sister, June; and her companion, Eddie Buell. She is survived by her nieces, Sharon and Glenda, as well as many cousins and great nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 10th at New Prospect Baptist Church in Gateway, Arkansas from 1:00-3:00 pm. Funeral service immediately to follow at 3:00 pm. Laverne will be laid to rest at Bayless Cemetery.
Wilma Laverne Welch leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and an enduring commitment to her family and community. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
