

Avery Carroll Watters passed into Christ’s arms on Friday, June 24, 2016. He was 88. Mr. Watters was born in Rome, GA on October 26, 1927 and was a resident of Rome and Floyd County most of his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, Avery Hunt Watters and Ethel Mae Watters and by a sibling, Erin Margaret Watters.
Mr. Watters graduated from the Boys School of Rome in1944, followed by his service in the United States Army Signal Corps in 1946-47. He was a Phi Kappa Phi honor graduate from the University of Georgia in 1950, earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Engineering.
Mr. Watters spent the first twenty-four years of his professional career in chemical engineering at the Celanese Fibers plant in Rome, after which he was an administrator for twelve years at Coosa Valley Technical School. He was an avid gardener and spent countless hours absorbing books of the histories of the World Wars, the United Kingdom and all of Europe. He also enjoyed classical music, the visual arts, and world travel. He had been a member of the First United Methodist Church since 1967, and was a member of the Upper Room Fellowship Sunday School Class.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, Sara Nelle Hester Watters, to whom he was married on March 18, 1950.
His children include Dr. Leslie Carroll Watters (Mary Anne) of Atlanta; Lori Kathleen Cole (Charles Richard) of Marietta; Mark Randolph Watters (Christina) of Lewisburg, PA; and Trina Janelle Watters (fiancé Dr. Gregory Smith) of Atlanta. Grandchildren include William Leslie Watters (Katie) of Atlanta; Robert Carroll Watters of Atlanta; Zachery Charles Cole and Amy Kathleen Cole, both of Marietta, GA; and Kristyn Mikayla Watters of Lewisburg, PA. Mr. Watters had one great-grandchild, Bennett William Watters of Atlanta. He is also survived by three sisters: Mary Jo Hartney, Greenville, SC, Sara Claire Milton and Jane Perry, Titusville, FL, and one brother, Don Watters (Carolyn), Carrollton, GA, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mr. Avery Carroll Watters were held Saturday, July 2, 2016 at the Rome First United Methodist Church at 12:00 noon. Visitation will be at 11 a.m. in the Wilder Center at the First United Methodist Church. A private interment was held at Floyd Memory Gardens prior to the visitation and service.
Honorary pallbearers were members of the Upper room Sunday School Class.
