
A native of Whitfield County, GA, Mrs. Terrell was born on September 30, 1921, daughter of the late Albert “Bert” Henry Griffin and the late Marie Morris Griffin. She was a graduate of Berry College where she was listed in Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. She earned her Bachelors of Science degree in Home Economics at Berry College and subsequently earned a Master of Education from the University of West Georgia.
A career educator, Mrs. Terrell taught 2nd grade at North Heights Elementary School, and North Rome Elementary School for many years. During her career in education, Mrs. Terrell supervised the student teachers from Berry College, and Shorter University. In 1984 she retired and was involved in Floyd County and Rome Retired Teachers Association. In addition to her career, she was active in P.E.O., the Ladies Auxiliary of Floyd Medical Center, the Rome Chapter of the Berry College Alumni Association, Daughters of Berry, and American Association for University Women. A charter member of the Alpha Nu chapter, Alpha Delta Kappa International Honorary Teachers’ Sorority, Mrs. Terrell was a member of the Fidelis Beta chapter for retired teachers and held offices in local, district, and state chapters. Mrs. Terrell was a long time active member of Rome First United Methodist Church where she participated in United Methodist Women, chancel choir and the Adult Fellowship Sunday School class.
Mrs. Terrell was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Stephens Hull Terrell on May 27, 2002; a brother, Milburn “Wade” Griffin died in France on January 17, 1945; two brothers-in-law, John Sheffield on January 17, 2004; and Tom Long on May 29, 2008; and her sister, Willie Irene Griffin Long, on December 23, 2010.
She is survived by one son, Steve Terrell, and wife, Sue Terrell of Ohatchee, Alabama; one daughter, Pam Terrell Clark of Rome; three grandchildren, Shawn Terrell Conley, and husband, Mark Conley of Grain Valley, Missouri, Paul Clark of Roswell, Georgia, Christy Clark Overall, and husband, Ryan Overall of Buford, Georgia; two great-grandchildren, Bella Rose Conley, and Van Conley of Grain Valley, Missouri; one sister, Melba Griffin Sheffield of Quitman, Georgia, one brother, Steed Griffin, and wife, Ellen Kenemer Griffin of East Ridge, Tennessee; nephews Lamar Long, and wife, Connie Long of Dalton, Georgia, David Griffin, and wife, Claudette Griffin of Hixson, Tennessee, Johnny Sheffield, and wife, Theresa Sheffield of Hahira, Georgia; nieces Sarah Long Fields of Dalton, Georgia, Debbie Long Headrick, and husband, Bruce Headrick of Dalton, Georgia, Lisa Griffin Steele, and husband, Jim Steele of Ooltewah, Tennessee, Susan Sheffield Steel, and husband, Chuck Steel of Valdosta, Georgia, Betty Sheffield Cox, and husband, Wayne Cox, of Monroe, Georgia.
On Wednesday, January 2, 2013, the family received visitors from 12 noon until 2 p.m. at the Wilder Center of First United Methodist Church of Rome. A memorial service followed at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Rome with the Rev. Larry Caywood, and David Terrell officiating. Interment was in the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.
