
Mrs. Doris Horne Ragsdale, age 90, of Rome, GA, died at a local hospital Tuesday January 14, 2014. A native of North Carolina, she was born in Selma, NC on February 25, 1923. She was the daughter of the late Wiley Griffith Horne and Viola Snead Horne. She was also preceded in death by her husband Arthur C. Ragsdale on October 28, 2010, to whom she was happily married for 67 years, and her brothers Charles, William, Wiley, Fred and Elbert.
Her father was employed by Southern Railway and she had the advantage of living in Selma, Charlotte and Winston-Salem, NC; Alexandria and Lawrenceville, VA; Greenville and Charleston, SC and Rome, GA.
At the end of World War II, she and her husband moved to his hometown, Rome. A graduate of Furman University with a BA in English and a Master of Education in Media from West Georgia College, she was privileged to teach at St. Mary’s Catholic School for 5 years, having served as principal during the time the nuns had been withdrawn. She later taught at Model Middle School for 17 years. After retiring from Model, she volunteered as a Pink Lady in the Outpatient Clinic at Floyd Hospital for 20 years.
Survivors include her son, Dr. Stephen W. Ragsdale, Ann Arbor, MI, her daughter, Janet R. Self, Birmingham, AL and grandchildren Rishi and Maya Ragsdale of Ann Arbor, MI and Austin and Garrett Self of Birmingham, AL along with a number of nieces and nephews. She lived a life of love and service to family and community and enjoyed needlepoint, gardening, bridge and word puzzles. She was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church of Rome.
A memorial service for Mrs. Ragsdale was held Sunday January 19, 2014 at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Larry Caywood and Dr. Robert Brown officiating. The family received friends one hour prior to the service in the Wilder Center. There was a short private interment after the service. In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests memorial contributions be made to your favorite charity.
