

Mrs. Battles was born on July 11, 1934 in Gadsden, AL. She was the daughter of the late Oscar Louie Powell and Bertha Noles Powell of Shannon, GA. She was preceded in death by her husband Oscar B. Battles of Rome, GA, her daughter Leigh Battles Bocock of Memphis, TN and her sister Louise Powell Cox of Albany, GA.
Mrs. Battles was a graduate of Model High School in Rome, GA and Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, GA. She was a dedicated school teacher and her career spanned more than three decades. She began her career at Model High School and later taught at Alto Park Middle School both here in Floyd County. While residing in Harriman, TN from 1975-1982, Mrs. Battles taught at Central Elementary School. After relocating to Dalton, GA in 1982, she taught at Eastbrook Middle School and ultimately at Valley Point Middle School in Whitfield County until her retirement. Mrs. Battles was a former member of Alpha Delta Kappa sorority for teachers.
Mrs. Battles and her husband moved back home to Rome, GA in 1996. They joined First Presbyterian Church. She was a devoted attendee of the traditional worship service and had actively participated in different ministries within the church.
She is survived by her son, Dr. William Jeffrey Battles of Dalton, Georgia.
A private graveside service for family was held on Monday, December 15, 2025 at Oaknoll Memorial Gardens in Rome, GA with Mr. Martin Foster officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to Providence Ministries or First Presbyterian Church in memory of Mrs. Battles.
