Woody was born in Ravenna, Kentucky, one of six children born to Troy and Nellie Smyth. He grew up with strong family values and a steadfast work ethic that guided him throughout his life. He attended Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, before proudly joining the United States Army in 1961. His service to his country was a source of lifelong pride.
Following his honorable discharge, Woody began his career with Hill Tractor in Rome, Georgia, before later joining General Electric. He was deeply proud of his 30 years of dedicated service and the many lasting friendships he built along the way.
Woody was married to the love of his life, Katherine Ellissia Witt Smyth, for 62 wonderful years. Together they built a home filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support for one another.
He was a proud and devoted father to four children: Robert Emory Smyth (Becky), Lisa Karen Teem (Larry), David Alan Smyth (Devon), and Judith Ann McNeely (David). Nothing brought him more joy than his role as “Granddaddy” to his 18 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and one great-grandchild on the way. He also greatly enjoyed attending the many sporting events of his grandchildren. His family was his greatest treasure and the center of his life.
Woody is also survived by his brother, Larry Dale Smyth of Ravenna, Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings: Glynn Smyth, Bertie Henderson, Lloyd Smyth, and Hoyt Baber.
A Christian man of great integrity, Woody lived his faith daily through kindness, humility, and service to others. He loved his family beyond measure and found joy in life’s simple pleasures—cheering on Kentucky basketball, enjoying watching tennis, and taking his daily drives to Richard B. Russell Airport or to his favorite local eatery. He will be remembered for his steady presence, gentle spirit, and the genuine warmth he shared with everyone he met.
Woody’s life was defined by love, faith, and devotion to family. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
The family will receive friends and loved ones at First Presbyterian Church on Friday, February 20, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., with the funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held immediately following at Sunset Hills Cemetery.
Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of a life well lived and a man deeply loved. Woody’s legacy of faith, love, and family will continue to guide and inspire all whose lives he touched.
