
A native of Centre, Alabama, Mrs. Sutton was born December 4, 1925, daughter of the late Gus and Etta Mae Mackey Rains. She was preceded in death by her husband, G.L. Sutton Jr., December 7, 1991, two sisters, Pauline Rains Stimpson, September 14, 1988, and Nettie Rains Minnis, April 2, 2008, and one brother Woodrow Rains. March 9, 2010. Mrs. Sutton moved to Rome, GA in 1944 and to Acworth in Cobb County GA in 2004. Mrs. Sutton served in Banking and retired from Wachovia. She was a graduate of Cherokee County High School, Centre, Alabama and Carroll Lynn Business College of Rome, GA
She was a member of South Broad United Methodist Church in Rome where she served as Secretary to the Administrative Board and was a former Sunday School teacher in the Elementary Department. Mrs. Sutton was a member and past President of the Quota Club of Rome and was a former District Secretary and Treasurer. She had been a member of Chiaha Art Guild, Rome Area Council for the Arts, and Amicae Sorority of Beta Sigma Phi.
In the Floyd County Democratic Association, she was presented the Floyd County Hall of Fame Award and received the Award of Democrat of the Year. She was also honored with the Maynor Camp Grant Award by the Women’s League of Floyd County.
Mrs. Sutton had served on various community and civic projects including the Business Division of United Way, American Cancer Society, March of Dimes, Clean Community Program, and Floyd Health Care Foundation.
She attended Georgia’s first Pre-White House Conference on Libraries at the request of the Honorable George Busby, Governor of Georgia, at the Georgia World Congress Center. She served as a volunteer for Rome’s Olympic Flag Celebration and as a judge in the Sesquicentennial Essay Contest for the Floyd County Board of Education.
Survivors include: Daughter, Nan Ellen Sutton Fuller, Son-in-Law David Michael Fuller of Acworth, GA, sister, Willie Mae Rains Jordan and sister in-law, Venice Rains of Centre, Alabama. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A memorial service was held Monday, October 7, 2013, at 2 p.m. at the Griffin Memorial Chapel of Daniel’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Warren Jones officiating. Interment was in Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens. The family received friends at Daniel’s Funeral Home on Monday from 1 until 2 p.m.
