Scot was born on October 9, 1946, to Frank and Elizabeth Wingert in Rome, Georgia. He was raised by his much-loved grandparents, Elizabeth and Francis Scott Gentry. Scot was named for his grandfather, although his name was spelled with only one “t”.
After graduating from Model High School, Scot enrolled as a first-year student at Berry College. He went on to earn degrees in Art and Biology, although art was always his passion. He used this education when he became employed by the Floyd County Board of Education as the first art teacher at Coosa High School. There he established the first art department where for almost five decades he introduced countless students to the joy of developing their creative talents. One of his early students went on to be employed as an artist and designer for the Disney Corporation. When he was notified of Scot’s death, he said “he didn’t know where he would have ended up if it weren’t for him.”
While still teaching, Scot began to do design work for friends and clients which eventually led to his co-ownership of Waynewright-Scot and Associates, a gift shop and design firm. He and his good friend and partner, Wayne Dempsey, enjoyed years of raucous excursions seeking antiques, paintings, and furnishings for their firm. These were some of the happiest times of Scot’s life.
Scot is survived by his former wife, Peggy Gansler Wingert de Liniere and her husband Roland de Liniere, his best friend and “sister” Virginia M. McChesney, family/friends, Edward and Francine Daniel, friends Ron Hale and Dwight Hodge, plus thousands of students Scot helped guide and influence.
A graveside service for Scot will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at 12:00 noon at Myrtle Hill Cemetery. Daniel’s Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Scot loved all animals, especially cats. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Cat Rangers 1931 Skylar Hill Drive, Buford, Georgia 30518.
