A native of Rome, Mr. Hobgood was born on January 17, 1944, son of the late Rednal Doyle Hobgood, Sr. and Minnie Lee Neely Hobgood. After graduation he served in the United States Army then pursued a career at Inland Container. Ray retired in 2009 after serving for 37 years. Being a man that enjoyed staying busy, Mr. Hobgood developed a love for working in the yard. In addition to yard work, Ray was passionate about softball. He not only played (he was known as “Hoppy”), but coached and was an umpire. Until his illness, Mr. Hobgood attended and was a member of The Church at Northside. Ray is remembered not only as a “simple man with simple needs” but as devoted, loving and attentive to his wife, family (especially his great nephews), friends and adored pup, Pepper. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Melissa Faye Hobgood and brother, Rednal Doyle Hobgood, Jr.
Ray is survived by his wife of 49 years, Linda F. Hobgood of Rome; a sister, Eleanor Pegg of Silver Creek; three nieces and two nephews. Eight great-nieces and nephews also survive.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 6, 2003 at 6 p.m. in the Griffin Memorial Chapel of Daniel’s Funeral Home with Rev. Phil Wade officiating. A receiving of friends will be held one hour prior to the service.
