
Mr. Vaughn was born in Rome, GA, on April 11, 1935, son of the late Horace Newton Vaughn and Ruby Landers Vaughn. Mr. Vaughn grew up on Face St. in the Oak Park area of Rome and attended Rome city schools. He joined the Navy in 1953 where he served on the USS Forrestal Aircraft Carrier as well as the submarine rescue ship USS Petrel for a total of 19 years of service. He served on the Naval Reserve for 10 years after retirement in the Norfolk Naval Ship Yards in Portsmouth, VA. He was a volunteer for the American Red Cross for 14 years as a blood driver, and he won various certificates of appreciation from the Red Cross and the Government for his services.
Survivors include his wife, Zorrina West Vaughn, to whom he was married on April 21, 1960; sons, Donald Eugene Vaughn of Aurora, Colorado and James Edward Vaughn and his wife Stephanie of Damascus, MD. Also surviving is one brother, Julian Franklin Vaughn and his wife Imogene of Armuchee, and one sister, Jane Vaughn Davis and her husband Frank of Rome.
Funeral services for Mr. Vaughn were conducted Monday, May 14, 201,2 at 11 a.m. at the Georgia National Cemetery, Canton, with the Rev. David Nance officiating. The Honor Guard of the Shanklin-Attaway Post #5 of the American Legion will provide military rites. The family received friends Thursday, May 10, 2012, from 6 until 7 p.m. at Daniel’s Funeral Home.
