
James Ballard Howard, 84, of 546 Haywood Valley Rd., Armuchee, passed away Friday, February 26, at a local hospital.
Mr. Howard was born in Floyd Co. on May 15, 1925, the son of the late Winfred Ballard Howard, Sr., and Mollie Chesser Howard. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Barrett Howard, on May 3, 1995, by a step-son, James Davis, two brothers, W. B. Howard, Jr., and Harry Moore Howard, and by one sister, Margie Sheridan.
Mr. Howard was employed by Battey Hospital and then the General Electric Co. for many years prior to retirement. He was a member of the New Armuchee Baptist Church, the Ben Morton Sunday School Class and the J.O.Y. Club. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army, and was a member of the Shanklin-Attaway Post No. 5 of the American Legion. He was also a member of the GE Retirees Club.
Survivors include his wife, June Waters Howard, to whom he was married August 1, 1999; three step-daughters, Gretna (John) Soltis, Vickie Mathis and Lori (David) Ivey; one grandson, Barry Davis; one granddaughter, Melissa (Kyle) Smith; one brother, Joe (Ginger) Howard, Rome; two sisters, Peggy Penney, Rome, and Mickey Hicks, Rome; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 28, at 2 p.m. at the New Armuchee Baptist Church with the Rev. Keith Kelly, the Rev. Ed Holsomback and Dr. David Howard officiating. Interment will be in the New Armuchee Cemetery with the Shanklin-Attaway Post No. 5 of the American Legion Honor Guard in charge of military rites.
Pallbearers will be Randy Howard, Danny Howard, John Soltis, David Ivey, Ronnie White and George Curry. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Ben Morton Sunday School Class.
The family will receive at Daniel’s Funeral Home on Saturday, February 27, from 6 until 8 p.m.
