Dr. Lancaster was born September 28, 1935 in Delta County, Texas to the late Johnnie Carlton and Lorene Parker Lancaster. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Lancaster. Surviving siblings are sisters, Betty Ann Hoenberger of Ben Franklin, Texas and Barbara Sue Yoesting of Magnolia, Texas and brother, Carl Lee Lancaster of Greenville, Texas and many nieces and nephews.
Dr. Lancaster is survived by his wife of 44 years, Mary Haskin Lancaster; a daughter, Julie Lancaster-Whann and husband Gordon of Valrico, Florida; 4 sons: Scott Lancaster of Commerce, Texas; John Lancaster, Jr. of Enniscrone, County Sligo, Ireland; Frank Lancaster and wife Brenda of Tampa, Florida; and Benjamin Lancaster of Rome, Georgia; 7 grandchildren: Veronica and Brodie Whann of Valrico, Florida; Joseph Lancaster of Rome, Georgia; Kate, Lola and Vivien Lancaster of Enniscrone, County Sligo, Ireland; Henry Lancaster of Commerce, Texas.
Dr. Lancaster graduated from East Texas State Teachers College in May, 1955 and taught high school in Texas. He then worked for Coca-Cola in Dallas, Texas before transferring to Coca-Cola in Atlanta, Georgia where he decided to enter the medical field. He enrolled at Emory University (School of Medicine), from which he graduated in June, 1967 with a Doctor of Medicine degree. After his internship at Floyd Hospital in Rome, Georgia, he did General Practice in Dahlonega, Georgia. In 1971-1975 Dr. Lancaster completed his General Surgery Residency at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Virginia. He received Certification from the American College of Surgery in December, 1977 and practiced General Surgery in Sevierville, Tennessee and continued his surgical practice when he moved to Rockingham, North Carolina. Dr. Lancaster was admitted as Fellow of American College of Surgeons in October 1981. Moving to Rome in 1986, he joined Emergency Services at Redmond Park Hospital serving Rome and Cedartown’s Polk Medical Center. Upon retirement in 2000 he worked for Women’s Outreach with Highland Rivers in the Rome, Cedartown, Cartersville, and Dalton areas.
John was a devoted husband, involved parent and grandparent. He participated and served in various capacities with the Boy Scouts of America. He was associated with First Christian Church of Rome. Later in life he developed a love for wood-working. And having grown up on a farm in Texas, he never lost his love of tilling the earth. He enjoyed and shared the bounty of his harvested vegetables and flowers, all of which he propagated from seeds year after year. And in his last few years, whenever John was working outside he was always accompanied by his dog Blue.
The family will receive friends on Monday April 8th, 2013 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Daniel’s Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday April 9th, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Floyd Memory Gardens, Rome, Georgia with Rev. Horace Stewart officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be designated to First Christian Church, 209 East Second Avenue Rome, Georgia 30161 or to the charity of your choice.
