Margaret Ann Underwood of Atlanta, GA, age 86 died Friday, July 8, 2022, at Emory Hospital. She was born October 8, 1935, in Rome, GA. She was the daughter of the late Roy and Nevelle Underwood and sister to Roy Underwood, Jr, who preceded her in death. Her loving partner, Jackie Jones, preceded her in death after over 50 years of life together.
Margaret was a Southern Bell telephone operator, attended college, and subsequently taught in the Atlanta Public School as an art teacher. Margaret and her partner Jackie, embraced all creatures large and small, often caring not only for their own pets, but taking care of the pets of their neighbors. Maggie, as she was affectionately called by her friends, was an avid photographer who captured engaging images through the lens of her camera and developed her own photographs in a darkroom at home. A beautiful red rose and rosebud are blooming in her front yard as a declaration of her joy in growing and cultivating plants. Most important of all, Maggie was surrounded by her caring and loving community of neighbors in Atlanta’s Lake Claire neighborhood where she resided for 50 years.
Maggie is survived by her cousin, Anna F. Lifsey, of Farmington, Hills, MI, Anna’s daughters Margi L. Bradway of Portland, OR, and Sara L. Ganser of Belleville, WI, as well as her cousin Teresa Dulaney of Rome, GA and Teresa’s daughters, Tessa W. Davis of Virginia Beach, VA, Mimi W. Weed of Rome, GA, and Anna M. Martin of Atlanta, GA. She is also survived by her partner’s brother, Michael Jones (Mary Ann) of The Villages, Florida, and niece, Beth Paul of Atlanta.
A graveside service was held Thursday, July 14, 2022 at 11:00 A.M. at Floyd Memory Gardens of Rome.
