
Lois Marie Higgins Hawkins, 95, passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early hours of September 11, 2022, at The Spires where the loving staff she referred to as her friends had been caring for her for the past year. Marie was born on October 21, 1926, in Rome, GA, the daughter of William Oscar and Sigrid Maria (Bervall) Higgins.
Marie graduated from Armuchee High School in 1944 where she met her husband, James Kelley Hawkins. They later married in 1949 after he returned from WWII. He preceded her in death in 1984.
Marie had many jobs over the years from picking cotton, working at the 5 and dime to working at Lindale and Celanese Mills. After the close of the mill, she went to work at Floyd County Water Dept. as a Clerk where she retired years later.
Marie was a member of the Rome Mineral Society and went on many rock digs. She was a talented artist and collector. She enjoyed working in her yard. She went on many trips including Sweden to the birthplace of her mother.
In addition to her parents and her husband she was preceded in death by her half siblings Helen (Loray) Gay and Raymond Higgins. Her older brother Howard Higgins and younger sisters Frances (Roy) Roper and Louise (Clay) Mathis. She was also preceded in death by her son James Michael Hawkins. She is survived by her first-born daughter Debra (Danny) Baker of Freeport, FL and her youngest child Chris (Shawn) Dempsey of Rome, GA. her siblings John (Lois) Higgins of Niceville, FL, Fred (Betty) Higgins of Pinnacle, TN, David Higgins of Villa Ricca, GA, and Christine (Gary) Ellison of Huntsville, AL, and sister-in law Betty Higgins of Crestview, FL, grandchildren Ann Marie (Mike) House, Jamie (Keith) Youngblood and their mother, her previous daughter-in-law Carole Gooch all of Rome, GA, Kelley (Jay) Seals, Ethan (Christie) Baker of Freeport, FL, Christina (Donnie) Romine of Harriman, TN, Nicole Lopez (Derek Potts), Lamar (Lena) Hudgins, Summer (Alison) Dempsey, Micah Dempsey of Rome, GA, 17 greatgrandchildren and multiple nieces and nephews.
A thank you celebration will be held at The Spires of Rome to thank them for all the love and care they have given her. A private family graveside service will held at a later date. In lieu of flowers please send donations to your favorite charity in her name.
