Ebbie was born February 17, 1935, in Columbia, South Carolina, to Moses Ebenezer Brinson VII and Ruth Maddox Brinson. He moved with his family to Summerville, where he and his brother
Bob made lifelong friends and lived a lifetime of stories.
He attended Darlington School, graduating in the Class of 1953. In later years, after losing many classmates and friends, he would flash a mischievous grin and proclaim himself “class valedictorian.” Ebbie continued his education at the University of Georgia, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order and was elected president. It was there that he met and married Barbara Ann Tillery (“B”).
After graduating from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1961, Ebbie and B settled in Rome, where they raised their two children, Ben and Sis. Ebbie joined the law firm Rogers, Magruder, and Hoyt and built a respected legal career. He was a member of the Rome and American Bar Associations, the State Bar of Georgia, and was a Fellow of the American College of Mortgage Attorneys.
B’s death in 1973 was a loss that shaped the rest of Ebbie’s life. In time, he found companionship again and married Grace Moore.
Ebbie was a longtime member of Coosa Country Club, where he indulged his love of golf and kibitzing. He was also a member of the Rome Exchange Club and First Presbyterian Church.
“Uncle Mose”, as he was well known, was a devoted University of Georgia football fan and proud season ticket holder with seats on the 50-yard line for more than six decades. He faithfully supported the Georgia Bulldog Club and was an active, consistent member of the Locker Room Gin Rummy Bunch, where he claimed to be the “teacher,” regularly referring to his “students” as his “worst class ever.”
Uncle Mose was known for his wit and his ability to find something funny in nearly every situation. Had Lewis Grizzard written this obituary — which would have pleased him very much— he might have said something like, “Uncle Mose had a laugh that showed up before he did, a loyal devotion to UGA football, and a healthy respect for a good bourbon.” He loved his family deeply. He was steady and present, cool without trying, funny without effort.
Ebbie is survived by his children, Moses Ebenezer “Ben” Brinson IX (Becky) and Sarah Brinson Dickerson (Bert); his grandchildren, Moses Ebenezer “Bo” Brinson X, Barbara Elizabeth “Beth” Brinson, Mary Josephine Davis “MJ” Dickerson, and Angus Peter Dickerson; his step-daughter,Deborah Brown, and step-grandson, Brennen Brown; his brother, Bob Brinson (Maggie); his sister, Jessie Brinson Greene (Tom); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ebbie was the kind of man who made the world lighter simply by being in it. He will be deeply missed.
A celebration of his life will be held at Coosa Country Club on Saturday, March 21, 2026 from 3:00 pm until 5:00 pm.
