
Mr. Newman was an engineer, historian, genealogist, golfer and community volunteer in Atlanta, Augusta, and Rome.
Mr. Newman was born in Atlanta July 8, 1923, the 2nd son of Versa Harris & Obie Newman. He was a 1950 graduate of Georgia Tech and a combat veteran of WW II, US Marine Corp, 2nd Division, Pacific Campaign, 1941-1945 and earned the bronze star for the Okinawa-Gunto Campaign. Mr. Newman was the founding partner of Newman Hibble & Assoc., Consulting Engineers in Atlanta. He served two terms with the GA State Board of Professional Engineers & Land Surveyors and was elected to the College of Fellows of the American Consulting Engineers Council. He was a member of Rome First United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his brother, Wilbur H Newman (Jean); his wife of 63 years, Sara Frances Chambers Newman; four children, Stephen C. Newman (Kathy), Denver, CO, Jane Newman Brooks (David) Rome, GA, Jill Newman Pate (Dan), Rome, GA, Tina Newman Early (Tom), Harlem, GA; five grandchildren, Mark Preston Brooks (Lisa), William David Brooks, Benjamin Charles Pate, Samuel Chambers Newman, Sara Louise Pate; and three great grandchildren, Miles, Marley and Jack Brooks.
A memorial service will be Tuesday, October 5, 2010 at 11 am at Rome First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Larry Caywood and the Rev. Dr. Alice Rogers officiating.
The family will receive friends Monday, October 4 from 5-7 pm in the Wilder Center Dining Room at the church.
