Audrey was born in Brooklyn New York to parents Margaret (Shea) and Stanley Fortuna. The family soon moved to Fairfield, Connecticut where she attended St. Anthony’s School and Roger Ludlowe High School. Accomplished academically, she was also involved in A Cappella Choir, Glee Club, Field Hockey, Softball, Basketball, and Skiing. As a member of the local 4H Club, Audrey raised chickens and learned to square dance. She competed in horseback riding and hackney events, earning several blue ribbons.
After graduating from New Haven State Teacher’s College, Audrey began teaching kindergarten in Fairfield Public Schools. Then, having achieved her Master’s Degree in Education from Bridgeport University, she taught in New London Public Schools. While in New London, she met her future husband Lewis (John) Hancock, a Naval submarine engineer. They married July 3, 1967, and moved to Fort Worth, Texas where they welcomed their two children Michael and Margaret (Marnie).
John’s work in the defense industry brought their young family to Kensington, New Hampshire. In 1973, they permanently settled in Roseville, California. Together, Audrey and John were devoted parents and a constant source of support for their family and friends.
In their retirement years, Audrey and John enjoyed travelling – especially to Ireland, where strong friendships and good times were had by all.
Audrey was predeceased by her husband, John (1999), brothers Richard (1957) and David (2000), niece (Lynn), and nephew (David). She is survived by her son Michael and daughter-in-law Samantha, daughter Marnie, grandchildren Dillon and Michaela, great-granddaughter Emma, sister Phyllis Fortuna, and nephew Stanley (Susan).
