

Charles Jr. Smith was born November 1st, 1931 in Lubbock, Texas. He went home to be with the Lord on November 22nd, 2018 in Carmichael, California. He was preceded in death by his four sisters; Wanda Byars of Phoenix, Arizona, Willa Musgrove of San Diego, California, Thelda Vanderpool and Dorothy Selby, both of Modesto, California, and both of his sons; Charles ‘Spike’ Smith and Robert W. Smith of Modesto, CA. He is survived by three grandchildren; Amanda L. Smith of Patterson, CA, Kelly Smith-Mandella of Sammamish, Washington, and Robert W. Smith of Jamestown, CA. Mr. Smith and his late wife, Betty Joe raised several foster sons over the years, surviving amongst them are Marlon Varin of Paso Robles, California and Manual ‘Guy” Williams of Las Vegas, Nevada.
Mr. Smith joined the Carpenters Union in 1949 and started work the week after high school graduation. In 1950, at the outset of the Korean War, Charles felt called to volunteer for the US Navy where he served in the aviation division as a fire fighter and aircraft re-fueler. During the war years, he met and married his first wife Wanda Hutcheson of Modesto, CA. He returned to construction in 1954 and retired from the trade as a superintendent in 1986. Many Sacramento and Bay Area hospitals, government buildings, and large malls are evidence of his handiwork and skill as a builder. Charles was a member of the Fraternal Order of Freemasonry for 49 years. He loved fishing, football, country music and dancing. Friday nights were often spent enjoying music and dancing at the Almond Tree Club in Roseville with friends.
A celebration of life memorial will be held Friday, December 7th, 2018, 10:00 am at Lambert’s Funeral Home located at 400 Douglas Boulevard in Roseville, California, followed by a graveside ceremony to be held at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon, CA., at 1:30 pm.
