BATTAGLIA, Petrinilla (Nee Candela). Born February 17, 1940 at Deaconess Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. Passed away peacefully October 14, 2023 at the age of 83 after a long struggle with Dementia. Petrinilla (known by her family and friends as Patti) was the beloved wife to husband Giovanni who pre deceased her in 2020. Patti is survived by her three children: Melina Bologna, Anthony Battaglia (Jerome Hooper), and Nick (Mandy) Battaglia, five grandchildren; Mary (Kurt) Urbin, Grace Bologna, and Gino, Sam, and Nick Battaglia, and her younger siblings Nick Candela, Augustino Candela, and Grace (Dave) Bourcier. Pre deceased by mother Grace Candela (Nee Oliveri), father Nick Candela, and siblings Vince Candela, Joseph Candela, Giroloma “Mona”Maynard, Chris Candela, Mary (Jim) Wyckoff, and the late Florence (Keith) Siopes.
Patti lived a full life. She spent the first nine years of her life on Detroit’s lower East side near St. Bonaventure Parish where Blessed Solanus Casey was famous. Her family moved to Tuscola, and around mid-Michigan from the late 1940s through the 1950s. As one of ten children, she helped out by hoeing sugar beets, tasseling corn, and working as a waitress at Zehnder’s and roller skating car-hop at Fischer’s in Frankenmuth. Later, Patti moved back to Detroit near 3 Mile Drive, and was an employee of Hudson’s where she sold records, and modeled nightgowns. She became a hairdresser in 1960, and worked in the profession for over 40 years. Patti was also an exceptional cook and baker, and was famous for her cannoli which were sold at Buscemi’s, Village Market, and Nino Salvaggio. She loved spending time with her family and friends, and her grandchildren were her pride and joy.
She will lie in state at 8:30am until the time of mass at 9:00am on Friday, October 20th at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, 6021 Whittier, Detroit, MI 48224. Internment will immediately follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton Township. The family wishes to give special thanks to the staff of Harmony Assisted Living for providing compassionate care.
