

Barbara H. Farthing of Dunwoody, died January 6, 2015 at age 87. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Atlanta, previously served on the Board of Directors for the Christian Women’s Club, and was a member of the Cherokee Chapter, NSDAR. Barbara attended college at UT-Chattanooga and had a varied career, spanning over 30 years as an educator, first as an elementary and parochial school teacher and later as Director of Georgia Neurological Institute’s Developmental Classroom, where she received special recognition for enhancing techniques for teaching children with severe auditory and visual impairment. Following her career in education she worked in support of the local arts community as Manager of Communications, Marketing and PR for the Dunwoody Stage Door Players, Executive Director of Georgia Business Committee for the Arts, and chaired fundraising for the North DeKalb Cultural Center. She always enjoyed traveling extensively with her husband Bill, and utilized the valuable experience in later years in outside sales positions with Atlanta International Travel and Prestige Travel of Dunwoody. Barbara also enjoyed music, was an accomplished pianist, and performed vocals on a daily radio program during her early years in Chattanooga. Barbara was well known and respected for her devotion to hard work and high quality in all her dealings. She was loved by her family and friends and will be greatly missed by all. She is survived by: two daughters, Rebecca Farthing and Mary Simonds and son-in-law James Simonds; two grandsons, Joseph Thomas Hyche and William Douglas Hyche, and daughter-in-law Jill Hyche; great grandchildren, Gabe Hyche, Connor Hyche, Hollis Parker and Del Parker; and nephew, George T. Farthing III. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM at the Roswell Funeral Home on Mansell Road in Roswell GA, followed by funeral services at 1:00 PM in the funeral home chapel. A family graveside service will be held at a later date at Arlington Memorial Cemetery, Sandy Springs GA.
