She graduated from Sol Bloom PS. 84 Elementary School, Wagner Junior High School in 1972, and Norman Thomas High School in 1976, all in New York City. In 1978, as a Legal Secretary major, she graduated from Post College in Waterbury CT, with an Associate of Science Degree. With her degree in hand, Belinda began her career as a Legal Secretary at some of the most prestigious law firms in New York City.
Belinda was very much into the arts, most specifically African dance, and singing. In both 1976 and 1981, she was selected to be a contestant in the Miss Black New York State pageant. Through the years she strengthened her relationship with Christ and she loved the Lord God Almighty with all her heart. She always wanted to serve God in all that she did. In her early days growing up in NYC, she worked at Central Baptist Church; her family church as the Church Administrator, the Choir Director, and Cheerleading Squad Director. Those positions were only a few of the ways Belinda found to serve. The Lord was always in her heart front and center and she did her best to live a life that was pleasing to him.
As time passed, Belinda knew that her passion was to become an entrepreneur. She decided to take a detour from her Legal Secretarial career and began building her own party and event planning business. She worked tirelessly often out of her home doing various events. Eventually, she was able to open her own shop called “Celebration House” in the famed “Mart 125” in Harlem NYC.
Though New York City had always been her home, she longed to raise her son and daughter in a new environment. In July 1999, Belinda said goodbye to her family and best friend Carol Smith, and moved to Marietta Georgia where she met one of her closest friends Wendy Malloy. She absolutely loved Georgia.
In her continued journey to strengthen her relationship with God, she joined a new church family in Georgia ‘Destiny Metropolitan Worship’, and her final church home ‘Eagles Nest’. During her new beginning in Georgia, she also transitioned her party and event planning business to “Akoma Events”. Akoma means “the heart” and represents love, unity, endurance, patience, tolerance, goodwill, and faithfulness. The perfect moniker for Belinda!
Though she was no longer in NYC, Belinda loved her family. When her older sister, Diana Alisa passed away, Belinda took on the responsibility of raising her youngest nephew, Travis Crute. Her love for him allowed him to become the man that he is today serving in a branch of the Army of our United States Military.
Belinda was true to her passion no matter the challenges; she was always steadfast in her need to achieve her goals. She never wavered but continued to be relentless in her passion to be a successful business owner. Belinda knew what she loved and would not under any circumstances be deterred. She was a prime example of hard work and dedication. She literally put her blood sweat and tears into everything that she did. All of us who have had the privilege of having her coordinate one of our events with beautiful balloon decor, or any of us who have been blessed enough to eat her delicious food which included her famous macaroni & cheese and other delicious desserts; know that we were served by the best.
Along with her parents, Belinda is preceded in death by her grandparents, Elise Dixon and Edward Burgess, Sr.; her sister, Diana Alisa Crute; her aunts, Harriett Phillips, and Gloria Jean Sumter; her uncles: Leroy Phillips, Curtis Phillips, Isaac Dixon Jr, and her cousin, Carla Phillips.
