Bernard David Irvin was promoted to the Lord’s presence on Monday, April 11, 2022, and was born in St. Augustine, Florida on September 11, 1932. He is the son to the late Bernard Daniel Irvin and Annie Maude Irvin, and recently moved to Johns Creek, Georgia along with his loving wife, Thelma B. Irvin.
Bernard received his bachelor’s degree from Wiley College in East Texas, where he also played basketball, and later his master’s degree from the University of Central Florida, and, while working in the field of education, met the love of his life, Thelma L. Brown, who is from Georgia. In addition, Bernard served in the U.S. Army for several years before being honorably discharged.
Bernard and Thelma were married in 1959.
Bernard’s career was spent teaching elementary and high school students and then later transitioned to working in school administration for the School District of Volusia County, Florida. He loved playing and coaching sports, which included but was not limited to basketball, boating, swimming, and fishing.
Bernard’s favorite sport was golf, and his proficiency in this athletic field yielded notable awards, including one placing him in the World Golf Hall of Fame in Pinehurst, North Carolina for his hole-in-one achievements, and he was a cruise enthusiast.
Also, and more significantly, Bernard was a man of God who always put his family first, and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was active for many years at Stewart Memorial United Methodist Church in Daytona Beach, Florida, where (among other things) he sang in the choir and was a lay speaker, and encouraged many in the Lord who worshipped there during those years.
Moreover, Bernard was also an active member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Men’s Senior Golf Association, and Ormond Beach Historical Trust.
Doubtless, he will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Bernard is survived by his loving wife, Thelma B. Irvin; three children, Rodney B. Irvin, Tracey I. Marks, and Jacqueline J. Moncrief; three grandchildren, Sydney D. Irvin, Julien D. Marks, and Carmen Moncrief; a brother, Willie J. Irvin; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
