Carl Carlson passed away peacefully on April 25, 2025 at the age of 80. A man of faith and principle, and a devoted husband, father, brother, and uncle, he was never far from a dad joke or bit of well-placed life advice. To this day, we are certain to measure twice, cut once.
Born to Eric and Ruby (nee Whitaker) Carlson in Oakland, California, he was the youngest of three brothers. Raised in the Bay Area, he grew up in roller skating dance pairs (think figure skating, but warmer), ultimately competing at the national level. It was there where, as a teen, he met Pat (nee Mather), who would become his wife of fifty-eight years.
Carl attended the University of California, Berkeley, studying business and graduating in 1966. Soon after, he began his thirty-five year career at IBM, earning his way through the ranks, though never at the expense of his dedication to time with his family. An early relocation brought the Carlsons to Atlanta, Georgia, which became home.
Carl was an eager volunteer with his kids’ high school marching band, giving countless hours to football games and competitions near and far. It was through that experience that he forged decades-long friendships with a group that would forever be known simply as “The Band Parents” (he thought the world of each of you).
Carl was preceded in death by his parents and eldest brother, William. He is survived by his wife, Pat; children Lesley (Chris) Poulton and James (Becky) Carlson; grandchildren Alexander Carlson, Paige Poulton, William Carlson, Porter Carlson, and Jonathan Poulton; brother Robert Carlson; nieces and nephews Paula Gerez, David Carlson, Traci White, and Ryan Carlson; and Goddaughter, Stephanie Schmalz.
Alzheimer’s Disease robbed him of his health, but never his humanity. To the very end, those he encountered spoke of his kindness, gentleness, and good humor. When our many layers - social, professional, familial - fade with time, perhaps what is left is our essence, our true self. Kind, funny, and gentle- we should all be so fortunate.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Alzheimer’s research. And, in the Fall, go to a high school football game and cheer for the marching band.
Carl will be buried in a private family service on Saturday, May 3, 2025, with a Celebration of Life to be scheduled for a later date.
