

Mrs. Carol Joy Cureton Sweigert went to the heavenly home Jesus has prepared for her on January 14, 2026, as a result of an acute illness. Mrs. Sweigert was born on June 9, 1939 to the late John and Gladys Cureton in Chicago, Illinois. The family moved to southwestern Michigan in 1945 when she was six years old. She graduated in 1957 from Central High School in Dowagiac, Michigan and in 1961 she earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Bryan College, a private Christian liberal arts college in Dayton, Tennessee. This was followed by graduate work at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee. She taught school, mostly high school history, for thirty-nine years in Michigan, Tennessee, Florida, and Georgia.
In 1981, Carol married Dr. Ray Leslie Sweigert, Jr., an educator in the Atlanta City School System, Venture School, Dekalb College (later Perimeter College), and Dekalb Technical Institute. They had twenty-nine great years together, enjoying travel, the Atlanta Symphony, books, Bible study, diverging political viewpoints, and their families, until his death in August 2010. She said about Ray the “He is the best man I have ever met.”
Carol and Ray were members of St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church, in Dunwoody, where she has remained active and involved with the choir and the Disciple Bible Study program, among other things. Carol was an ordained Deacon in the Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Sweigert is survived by 3 sisters and brothers-in-law including, Ruth and Devon Armstrong, Louise and Mike Sadowitz, and Anita and Bill Krogel, as well as Helen Sweigert, sister-in-law. She is also survived by 14 nieces and nephews, and 23 grand nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church, 1978 Mt Vernon Rd, Dunwoody, GA 30338 on Sunday, March 8, 2026 at 3:00pm. She was interred beside her husband at Westview Abbey in Atlanta’s Westview Cemetery.
