

Brigadier General Columbus Monroe “Buck” Womble (US Army, Retired) of Alpharetta, GA entered into God’s care July 27, 2012 following a lengthy battle with cancer. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m., Tues. July 31, 2012 at Roswell Funeral Home, 950 Mansell Rd., Roswell, GA 30076. Celebration of Life services will be held at 11 a.m, Wed., Aug. 1, at North Atlanta Church of Christ, 5676 Roberts Drive, Dunwoody, GA. with Don McLaughlin officiating. Interment, with full military honors, will follow at the Georgia National Cemetery, Canton, GA. He was born Feb. 3, 1941 in Florence, AL to his late parents Robert Clark Womble and Lucile Gladys Gooch Womble. He graduated from the University of North Alabama with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics and Chemistry and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant, U.S. Army in 1963. He immediately entered Active Duty serving in a variety of progressive command, staff, and instructor assignments throughout his career in air defense and field artillery organizations from platoon to division and corps level. Later he served in joint operations assignments at the Pentagon and the National Military Command Center. BG Womble attended Artillery Officer Basic Course, Field Artillery Advanced Course, Command and General Staff Course, and the Army War College. While attending the Army War College he also earned a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Shippensburg University. He served at numerous US and overseas locations including: Hawaii, Korea, Germany, England and Vietnam. He retired as a Brigadier General in 1994 with 31 years of military service to his country. His military awards and decorations include: Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Bronze Star Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Achievement Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Ranger Tab and Parachutist Badge. After leaving the military, he held several management positions in the electronic security industry and General Dynamics where he once again worked closely with the US Army. He became a Christian at age 12 and faithfully served his Lord for the rest of his life. He was active in church life wherever he was stationed and often taught Bible classes. After he moved to Atlanta, he was an active member of North Atlanta Church of Christ in Dunwoody, GA. Buck met Cindy Kidwell, a US Air Force Second Lieutenant Nurse while stationed at Maxwell Air Force Base who became his loving, dedicated, supportive wife of more than 45 years. Survivors include his wife Cindy Kidwell Womble of Alpharetta, GA; two daughters Beth Cravotta (Mark) of Alpharetta, GA and Janelle Burch (John) of Maitland, FL; five grandchildren: Steven and Jack Cravotta; Callen and Mackenna Burch and Casey Ann Monroe Burch (expected in August); sisters Dorothy Wood, Ruby Hanback, Faye Davis (Leon), and brother Robert Clark Womble Jr., all of Florence, AL. He was preceded by siblings Margaret Isley and Leslie Brooks Womble. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions have been designated to the Winship Myeloma Fund of Winship Cancer Institute, of Emory University.
