Born to Wilford Darwin Thompson, Sr. and Marion Evelyn Sassard and raised in Palatka, Florida, Frances often recalled her wonderful childhood: a loving family, tormenting her older brother, and enjoying wonderful lifelong friends. She readily admitted to being mischievous at times. After graduating high school, she briefly attended Stetson University, before moving to Atlanta where she met her future husband, Jim Haney, at Piedmont Park. Jim and Frances were married in 1961 and raised three sons. She was often Team Mother for her sons’ sports teams and regularly participated in school activities.
In the 1970s she worked as a receptionist for a dental practice, and as a church secretary for Riverside Church Atlanta. She and Jim moved to Palatka, Florida in the early 1990s to help support and care for Fran’s mother, Marion “Mimi” Thompson. While there she worked as the secretary for her brother Wilford D. Thompson, Jr. and later celebrated 20 years working as a receptionist for Ophthalmologist Dr. George A. Davis. She retired at 74 years of age.
In 1978 with the encouragement of Jim’s boss Dick Carpenter, and through Bill Gothard Family Life seminar, Fran and Jim rededicated their lives to the Lord and to their family. They became active members of Riverside Church Atlanta, and later Grace Community Baptist Church in Palatka, Florida. Upon their return to Atlanta, they attended Holy Trinity Anglican Church.
Fran is survived by her three sons, Beau (Laurie), Scott (Lucy), & Brett; grandsons, Colton, Jonah & Ian; her nieces and nephews: Sherri, Kim, Pepper, Kevin, Brittany, & Joshua. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Jim, brother Wilford; grandchildren, Callye & Caleb.
Fran will forever be known as a loving, fun, and faithful mother, aunt and friend. She was a wonderful role model in how to love even in adversity. She never shied away from sharing God’s word with others. She was known to play hymns on her harmonica or kazoo, even embarrassing her teenage sons in Harbor Town, Hilton Head Island. Not only was she an anchor for her family but for her son’s friends as well. You could always count on her love, knowing she was supporting you in prayer and with an encouraging word.
She will be missed and loved for her wonderful and playful spirit and generosity. We are comforted that she is at peace and that it is well with her soul. We know that upon her entry to heaven she was greeted by the words, “Well done my good and faithful servant.”
