The Warren family sadly announces the death of their beloved father, Jim Warren, who passed away peacefully at his home in Roswell on December 15, following an extended illness. His humor, spunk and love will be missed by all.
James Champlin Warren was born on May 7, 1929, in the Chicago suburb of Oak Park, the third of five mischievous boys. Jim’s energy and passion for sports were first evident in high school, when he was voted “Most Athletic” while attending Harvard High in Harvard Illinois. In later life, he would jokingly tell people he was a Harvard graduate.
Jim received a football scholarship to Loras University, where he played quarterback. He later transferred to the University of Wisconsin, where he earned a B.S. degree in chemical engineering in 1953. The beginning of Jim’s career was delayed by the Korean War, in which he served in the U.S. Army. While stationed at Fort Lewis, WA, he managed the Officers’ Club, a perfect assignment given his out-going personality, and his love of music and a good martini.
After completing his service in the Army, Jim moved to Philadelphia, where he met Mary Elizabeth Dougherty. Mary quickly became the love of his life, and they married on July 25, 1959.
Jim’s 42-year career began at Sun Oil Company, which later merged with Amoco. He held product management and market development positions which facilitated Amoco’s entry into several petrochemical businesses. His career successes propelled him to global responsibilities, which fed his lifelong passion for travel.
Nothing made Jim and Mary happier than their five children and seven grandchildren. Arranging annual vacations for the extended family was always a priority. No vacation was complete though, unless there was golf involved. An avid golfer, Jim played many of the great courses around the world. While at home, he never missed a chance to play with his buddies at Cherokee Country Club.
Jim was a faithful parishioner at St. Peter Chanel Catholic Church, where he served on the Finance Committee.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Schneider Warren and John M. Warren, a son, Timothy James Warren, and three brothers. He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Mary Warren, his children, Dan (Lynn) Warren of Atlanta, Beth Kilguss of Charlotte, NC, Anne Warren of Atlanta, and Jim (Melinda) Warren of Claremont, CA, as well as his brother, Dr. Jeffrey Warren of Sanibel Island, FL. Jim is also survived by his seven beloved grandchildren: Andrew Warren, Katy Warren, David Kilguss, Anna Kilguss, Charlie Warren, Jack Warren and Caroline Warren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Peter Chanel Catholic Church, 11330 Woodstock Rd., Roswell, GA 30075 (https://stpeterchanel.org/) on January 3, 2019 at 10:30 AM, with a Commital to follow at Green Lawn Cemetery in Roswell, GA.
In lieu of flowers, the Warren Family requests donations to St. Peter Chanel Catholic Church or Cure Alzheimer’s Fund in memory of James Champlin Warren.
