Alpharetta, Georgia
Alpharetta, Georgia – Kathleen J. Long, a long-time resident of Carmel and the Monterey Bay Area died Friday at Northside Hospital Atlanta. Her death followed a short illness and surgery.
Born in 1921 in Grimsby, England, Kathleen looked forward to seeing the world. Following her education and secretarial training Kath joined the Allied Commission. After a stint in a secretarial pool in London she was off to Vienna to support post WWII Austria reconstruction. While in Vienna she met a young American, Jim Long. A wedding in Kath's hometown soon followed. For the next 30 years Kath followed Jim as the military moved them from Texas to Guam, and many more stops before landing on the Monterey Peninsula.
Kath loved the Peninsula and often remarked how much the area reminded her of England. She was active in St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, on the Naval Postgraduate School grounds. Kath loved playing bridge and socializing. She also loved a nightly scrabble game with Jim until his death in 2005.
She is survived by her sons, James and Arthur, who live with their families in Littleton, CO, and Alpharetta, Georgia, and 8 grandchildren (Christina, Joanna, James, Edward, Matthew, Jessica, Kaitlin, and Kellsey). Funeral arrangements at San Carlos Cathedral are pending. Information can be obtained at Mission Mortuary, Monterey.
