We send our love and condolences to you today as you remember the unexpected passing of Merle a year ago.  It's so hard to believe it's been a year since this shocking event.

Merle was such a happy-go-lucky chap.  When he was our "son" during his senior year at EMHS and then again beginning college at EMU we made some happy memories.  I recall his appreciation for the food I (Esther) prepare but especially his LOVE for fresh sliced peaches in the summer.

I (Ernie) recall when we took Merle with us to join Eldon on the mall in Washington DC on 4th of July to watch the fireworks.  It was a once in a lifetime experience.  Got home at 3:00 in the morning, exhausted, but happy for the experience.

What a beautiful send-off for our beloved friend, and how terribly hard to say goodbye. You are in our thoughts and our hearts. Sending you big-hearted love as Merle himself would.

I shared these thoughts on Facebook and will post them here as well.  I remember Merle's friendly and positive spirit and am so glad to have been friends with him -- it's hard to believe we met almost 40 years ago now.  He was fun-loving and always added positive energy to events and get-togethers over the years.  As part of our close group of friends in college, I remember many outings and adventures together where he played a key role.  Some specific fond memories are playing hide and seek in Lehman Auditorium at EMU and taking a trip to DC and eating Ethiopian food for the first time. After college it was great to meet some of his friends from contra-dancing and join some fun-filled game nights he hosted. I'll remember the great joy he got from contra-dancing even though I wasn't part of that. He was engaging to discuss politics with, and I appreciated his desire for a more just society.  It looked to me like he "found himself" and was living the life he wanted to. I know he loved Monique and his sons and the rest of his family. In recent years, I didn't see him as often as I would have liked, but on social media I enjoyed seeing him with their dogs, kayaking, and contra dancing with huge smiles on his face. What a good, decent man and friend you were, Merle -- we can't believe you are no longer with us, and we won't forget you!
