Born Rebecca Oms Hidalgo on January 5, 1941 in Havana, Cuba, to parents Raul Oms and Ana Rosa Hidalgo, Rebecca loved to attend dances at El Club de Profesionales. As a child, her family affectionately nicknamed her “Rebequita no”; she was full-spirited and feisty – qualities that describe her entire life.
In Havana, she entered into her first matrimony to Ricardo Nicolas Fuentes, the father of her eight children. They left Havana in 1961 and settled in Miami, FL. Over the next several years, they opened their home and hearts to dozens of family members fleeing the Castro regime including several minor cousins they considered their children (Ramonin Planas, Luis Angel and Sebastian Planas, and Lily Planas and Luis Alberto Planas).
Above all else, Rebecca loved her children and family and made everyone feel special and uniquely loved. She brought light and laughter to every occasion. She enjoyed cooking Cuban food for her children, visiting family, and shopping for gifts for her entire family. No one could visit her and leave empty handed. She always had a gift handy, and if she did not, she would find something in her closet. If anyone complimented a piece of jewelry or accessory she wore, she often said “You like it? Here, it’s yours.” These things made her a “happy camper.” Rebecca was also a big hugger. You were guaranteed to feel good after a hug from her. She often ended conversations with her children and beloved family members by saying “I love you to the moon and back.” She was full of spunk, grace, kindness, warmth, laughter, elegance, and big love for everyone.
In the early 1980s, in her second matrimony, Rebecca reunited with a childhood friend from Havana who she knew even before attending kindergarten together at Hermanas Anido – Orlando Nunez de Villavicencio. They married and spent the last 40+ years of their lives together.
Along with her parents, Rebecca is preceded in death by her son, Angelo; the father of her children, Ricardo Fuentes; her two sisters, Lourdes Oms Cora and Ana Hopson Hidalgo; her mother-in-law Margot Planas; her brother-in-law Jose Roberto Fuentes; and her godson/nephew Joseph Roberto Fuentes.
She is survived by her husband, Orlando Nunez de Villavicencio; her children, Ana Margarita (Debbie); Ricardo Raul “Rick” (Kimberly); Maria Cristina “Mary” (Kevin); Raymond Henry “Ray” (Mia); Roberto Martin “Robert” (Jennifer); Andres Ramiro “Andy” (Kim); Rebecca Maria Isabel “Becky” (Tammi); her brother, Romilio (Hyrbis); her grandchildren Ross (Kayla), Matthew, Jamie, Jillian, Martin (Haley), Eric, Angelo, Ezra, Drew, Drake, Alden, Devin (Angelina), Junior, and Gabi; her great-grandson Lalo; her sister-in-law, Margarita Fuentes; and dozens of beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins including niece Ana Elena, her daughter Anilu (Jesus) and their children Stephanie, Gabi, and J.R.; niece Anilu (Arturo) and their children/grandchildren Fabiola (Dan), Lulu, Mimi, and Yocheved; niece Beatriz (Lauren); nephews Ruly (Marlen) and Guille (Elizabeth), and his daughter Giana.
