Russell George Munzer

Russell George Munzer, age 95, of Alpharetta, Georgia, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2021 in his home surrounded and covered in love. Russell was born to the late George and Margaret Munzer on Feb. 7, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois. Russell is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 69 years, Bernice Rooney Munzer and his sister Lois Beyer.

His memory will be cherished by his 3 children, Gerard Munzer, Eileen Hosie, and Carolyn Gibson, their spouses, his 7 grandchildren and one great grandchild, all of whom he adored.

Russell attended Andrew Jackson High School in Queens, NY where he was a skilled basketball player. He joined the Navy upon graduation and served as a signalman on the USS Bronstein in World War II. He met his wife Bernice on a blind date in 1945 and they married in 1951. They brought up their family of 3 in Huntington, Long Island and then later moved to Wyckoff, NJ. He had a lifelong career at Sears Roebuck as an executive in the catalog and concessions departments.

Upon retirement, their love for the ocean brought them to Juno Beach, Florida and then on to many years in Hilton Head Island. On a quest to be even closer to family they eventually settled in Georgia. They had many a laugh with their pals in an active retirement community in Hoschton, where Russ started a softball league and thus left a legacy with the field named after him. Russ and Bernice ultimately settled in Alpharetta, Georgia. His devotion and loyalty to his family was fierce. He cared dearly and tirelessly for his wife Bernice, who fell ill with Alzheimer's in their twilight years and this was perhaps his greatest achievement and ultimate act of selflessness.

Russ was admired by all that met him. His sense of humor was extraordinary. His pastime was his love of all sports; especially baseball, and his allegiance was always to the NY Yankees. Russell will be honored on August 30th at 2:30 with an intimate service and buried with military honors at the Georgia National Cemetery.
