Yolanda Suárez passed away peacefully on October 22, 2023. She was 86 years old. Yolanda was born in Havana, Cuba on February 18, 1937 to Policarpo Sole and Candelaria Alfonso. She grew up in Havana as a child but moved to the United States with her mother when she was older. Her mother often talked of her “little girl” Yolanda with her co-workers. When they randomly ran into her co-worker Pablo Suárez on the subway one day, he was surprised to see that the little girl his friend had been talking about was actually a beautiful young woman. They fell for each other and the rest is history. They married in Cuba in 1957 and had 2 sons and 1 daughter. They lived in Cuba until 1969 shortly after communism claimed the country.
Yolanda was a brave and strong woman. She moved to the USA on her own with their three young children while they waited for Pablo to follow them. It was 5 years before he was able to get away and join them in America. During their time apart, Yolanda sacrificed a lot for her family. She worked many jobs and took remarkable care of her children in a foreign land where she didn’t speak the language fluently. As hard as it was, she still created a loving home and used her spunky humor to lighten the load for everyone around her.
Once the family was all together again, they moved to Puerto Rico. There was no language barrier and Yolanda was able to use her teaching credentials there. She taught for 10 years. When her children were grown, she and Pablo moved to Miami where she continued to work in school systems in different roles for many years. She was a remarkable woman and well loved by those who knew her. Her quick wit endeared her to many as did her sarcastic sense of humor. She was sassy and not afraid to show it.
As they aged, Yolanda and Pablo moved to Gainesville, Georgia to be near their daughter, Yoli, who has cared for them both. The couple continued to love one another through difficult illnesses and stuck together as they promised all those years ago. Some of Yolanda’s favorite activities were when she and Pablo would do crossword puzzles together, or when Pablo would read to her each day. He brought the suspense of each book and all the characters to life. The joy of those moments every evening carried her through many hard days. She will be missed, but her genuine heart for her family and her laughter will always be remembered.
